When Security Becomes Invisible
By LouAnn Berglund Haaf . 8 minute read
The word “silo” carries a familiar meaning in data conversations: information trapped in one place, cut off from the rest of the organization. So when I asked Scott Davis whether data security itself had become a silo, his answer took us somewhere different. “My knee-jerk reaction was absolutely, it’s a silo,” he told me. Then he reconsidered. “When you think of silos, we think of data being stuck in its own little corner. And that’s not the case with data security at all.”

When I first met Tom Petzinger, there was a wall of books behind him. This seems entirely as it should be. When I mention them, he tells me some are research for a new book he has been working on for a year, and the books I can see are only part of the collection. He describes the shelf above the bed he shares with his wife, Paulette, beginning to sag under their weight. “It just might be the end of us,” he says with a laugh. Death by books. I’m enjoying him already, and we’ve barely gotten through the introductions.
